NGOs & Refugee Stories: Communicating for Solidarity & Equality

Refugee Council

On 19 February, an insightful and impactful training and networking event was held in Vilnius, bringing together NGOs working on refugee and migration issues. The event aimed to enhance awareness of the European Union's fundamental values while fostering discussions on the challenges faced by refugee and migrant communities.

Event Overview

The event commenced with a warm welcome and introductory presentations by representatives from RCL and Sienos Grupė. Participants gained valuable insights into the principles of human rights, solidarity, and equality as upheld by the EU, with a particular focus on their application in the context of Vilnius. A key discussion point revolved around the common misconceptions regarding migrant communities, often exacerbated by populist narratives. These narratives frequently link migration to social issues such as unemployment and cultural change, contributing to discrimination, hate crimes, and restrictive asylum policies.

Interactive Learning & Engagement

A major highlight of the event was an interactive role-playing session where participants practiced countering populist rhetoric. Through the use of factual arguments, personal storytelling, and positive reframing techniques, attendees learned how to effectively challenge harmful narratives. This hands-on approach empowered NGO members to advocate for refugees and migrants within their communities and professional circles.

Additionally, a presentation by Sienos Grupė shed light on the humanitarian aspects of migration. Firsthand accounts of border violations were shared, along with discussions on response strategies, including public demonstrations and advocacy efforts.

Critical Debate & Reflection

The event also featured an engaging debate session centered on the motion:

"Charity creates dependency, whereas empowerment creates sustainable refugee solutions."

Participants were divided into two groups, each presenting arguments for and against the topic. This dynamic exchange encouraged critical thinking and broadened perspectives on sustainable refugee support strategies. Many attendees expressed appreciation for the discussion, noting that it challenged them to consider new viewpoints and re-evaluate existing assumptions.

Conclusion

The event concluded with reflections from NGO representatives and attendees, emphasizing the importance of courage, openness, and empathy in refugee advocacy. Participants expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to connect, share experiences, and refine their approaches to supporting migrants and refugees.

We extend our sincere thanks to all those who attended and contributed to the discussions. Your voices play a crucial role in fostering empathy, raising awareness, and advocating for a more inclusive and equitable society. Special thanks to the EU and Open Lithuania Foundation program "Verta" for their support. #remiaALF #CERV
