EU Values and Human Rights Training

On September 26, 2024, the staff members of the Refugee Council of Lithuania participated in a training session on EU values and human rights led by Assoc—Prof. Dr Dovilė Gailiūtė at Mykolo Romero University. The session offered an in-depth exploration of human dignity, democracy, freedom, equality, and the rule of law—core EU values guiding the Refugee Council’s mission. Dr. Gailiūtė underscored the role of human dignity, as enshrined in Article 3 of the European Convention on Human Rights, in shaping EU policies.

We discussed contemporary challenges such as digital discrimination, particularly in the context of AI, and explored practical ways to address these issues in their daily work. The session also highlighted the importance of an independent judiciary, particularly the role of the Court of Justice of the European Union in maintaining the rule of law.

Through interactive discussions, participants were encouraged to consider the vital role of education and NGOs in promoting EU values. The session equipped the staff with valuable insights into defending these values and human rights, empowering them to serve vulnerable communities in Lithuania better.

Throughout this training, EU values were applied to enhance our projects aimed at refugee empowerment and their representation within Lithuanian society. We believe our initiatives can bridge the gap between theoretical principles and practical realities, such as overcoming social distance, discrimination, and exclusion.

The project is funded by the EU through the Open Lithuania Foundation program "Verta." However, the views or opinions expressed during this session are solely those of the participants and do not necessarily reflect the official stance of the European Union or the Education and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA). Neither the European Union nor the EACEA can be held responsible for them.
