2026-04-08, Refugee Council of Lithuania held the interactive simulation “A Journey into Exile” at the Vilnius District Municipality, bringing together participants for an immersive experience designed to deepen understanding of refugee realities.
“A Journey into Exile” is an educational simulation that invites participants to step into the shoes of refugees and experience, in a guided and reflective way, some of the difficult choices and uncertainties faced by people forced to flee their homes. During the activity, participants take on refugee characters with short personal biographies, make individual and group decisions, listen to real refugee testimonies, and watch short videos illustrating journeys marked by risk, resilience, and hope.
The simulation creates a space for non-refugees to better understand refugee experiences, encouraging empathy, solidarity, and more welcoming attitudes toward displaced people in our communities.

The event concluded with a guided reflection session, where participants shared their thoughts, emotions, and insights gained through the experience. Their active engagement and openness made the discussion especially meaningful and impactful.
At the end of the event, participants were also introduced to VolEver, the new mobile app launched by the Refugee Council of Lithuania that connects Ukrainian refugees with volunteers ready to help. Through the app, refugees can receive support such as language practice, accompaniment to administrative offices, help navigating the city and services, everyday practical assistance, and online guidance. Volunteers can easily offer their time, knowledge, and support, making a real difference in people’s lives.

Refugee Council of Lithuania extends sincere thanks to everyone who participated in the simulation, as well as to the Vilnius District Municipality for hosting and supporting this important initiative.
The “A Journey into Exile” methodology was developed by JRS Canada and is used under license by Refugee Council of Lithuania.
